I get Error Messages when I boot

Home

"Operating System Not Found"

  • The computer is trying to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk, CD or USB device. Computers are often setup use these first and boot the hard drive only if no other device is found. Remove any floppy disks and CDs and unplug any USB drives or devices like MP3 players. You can also change your CMOS settings to tell the computer which device to boot from first.

"Primary Hard Drive Not Found"

The computer cannot find your hard drive. There are several possible causes:

  • You changed your BIOS settings, see your computer manual to restore them.

  • The hard drive is dead

  • The drive controller on the motherboard is not working

  • The cable connecting the drive to the motherboard is loose or defective

"Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad" or “Hard Drive Failure Eminent!”

  • Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T. is a system that modern hard drives use to detect problems (hopefully) before the drive actually dies. These messages indicate that your drive is not functioning properly and will die soon. Backup your data and replace the drive.

Chkdsk runs when you start the computer

  • Even the best computers sometimes develop disk errors and Chkdsk automatically fixes these problems during bootup. However this should be a rare occurrence. If it happens often and/or it states that it has to repair bad sectors, this is a sign that the drive may be failing. Backup your data and have a technician check it out.
