What is Linux?

Home

You have heard of Windows and Mac, but there are other computer systems around. For example, BSD is a system that runs a lot of servers, you are now accessing this web page from a BSD server.

Linux is a system that was started in 1991 by Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki. Instead of keeping it to himself, he offered it to anyone who wanted to use or improve it. Today there are hundreds of versions or distributions built on the same core.

Advantages of Linux:

  • Most distributions are free or very low cost

  • Newer distributions are very easy to use

  • It is very stable

  • It is very secure and immune to all Windows viruses and spyware

  • It can do almost anything Windows can do

  • Distributions are available for all computers from the oldest to the latest.

  • Huge amount of free software available, everything you need.

  • Can install without removing Windows so you choose between the two.

Disadvantages

Although there are systems that allow Linux to run Windows programs, they are not perfect. In almost every case it does not matter as there is usually a Linux program to do the job. However if you have a special custom written program for Windows, it may not work. Linux may not be your choice if you are into heavy gaming.

My favorite distributions:

Linspire

This is not free but low cost, it is the easiest to set up and maintain, easier than Windows. Best choice for beginners.

Pclinuxos

A free, beautiful, easy system, this is the one I use most.

Mint Linux.

The most complete system out of the box, comes with just about everything you need. May be slow on older computers.

Puppy Linux

A small, very fast distribution developed for older computers. It flies on computers that struggled to run Windows 98. Suitable for general use but does not have all the features of the bigger distributions.
