My computer won't start

Home

  • Check that it is plugged into a live outlet and the keyboard, mouse and monitor are properly plugged in.

  • Unplug all accessories such as IPods, MP3 players etc. I know this is strange but I have seen computers refuse to start with these devices attached. If the computer starts, plug them in one at a time and restart to see which is causing problems.

  • Turn on the computer and listen for a SINGLE beep. This beep means that the power supply, motherboard, processor, memory and video systems are working.  No beep or several beeps indicate hardware problems, you need a technician.

  • A clicking sound usually means that the hard drive is dying or dead.

  • Look for error messages on the screen.

Windows starts to load then freezes or restarts.

  • This could be a software problem. For example, this can occur when two anitivirus programs are installed on the computer. Try using "Last Good Configuration" or "Safe Mode" to undo your last changes or restore to an earlier date. If this does not work, you may have to repair or reinstall Windows. See your computer manual on how to do this. Note that reinstall will erase all your data.

  • This could also be caused by hardware problems. If the software solutions do not work, get a technician to check it.
