Can lost data be recovered?

Home

  • If the computer won't start because Windows is corrupted, try booting to Safe Mode and recover the data from there. If Safe Mode does not work, it is still possible to recover the data but some technical skill is required.

  • If the disk is good but the computer won't boot because of some other hardware problem then your data is probably safe and can be recovered. The disk has to be removed from the computer to access the data.

  • If the data was deleted it may be possible to recover it but the more you use the computer the greater the chance that the files will be permanently overwritten. Stop using the computer and contact a technician.

  • If the disk was repartitioned and re-formatted, data recovery is possible but not guaranteed.

  • If Chkdsk states that the disk is corrupt or has damaged sectors then data recovery may be possible. Let Chkdsk attempt to fix the damage. Note that even if the problem is corrected, the disk may be failing so backup your data immediately.

  • If the drive has electronic or mechanical problems, the average technician cannot help. Any attempt to open the drive will probably result in permanent data loss. However there are companies that specialize in recovering data from dead drives but be warned that it could cost thousands of dollars. You can try Ontrack Data Recovery or DriveSavers.
